Im gonna try to guess the whole story.

your father was that little kid, and he was hitchhiking to get home. On his way, he met this stranger, he thought he was a dangerous assasian, and he was scared that the stranger was going to kill him, so he kept imagining him killing the little boy. I can keep guessing, but im too astonished by the movie to continue.
